From Detrás del muro ( From Behind the Wall )

Piece created at the Taller Experimental de Gráfica de La Habana.
In 2018, TLP member Joan Effertz participated in the Bridges Not Walls cultural art exchange. Tiger Lily Press, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, was represented by Joan, where she printed at Taller de Experimental de Gráfica de la Habana.
The artist’s work is rooted in a fascination with both the affinities and the differences among people, as well as in the enduring relationship between humanity and the earth. These concerns run as consistent threads throughout his practice. Having lived and traveled extensively across the United States and Europe from childhood, he grew within an environment shaped by ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity, together with the breadth of varying landscapes. This early exposure profoundly influenced his worldview and artistic sensibility.
Trained under Clare Romano—internationally renowned printmaker and author—he embraced her lesson that content must take precedence over technique. As a printmaker, he continues in this lineage, ensuring that message and meaning lead the process of creation.
Employing media and formal elements as a writer employs language, he constructs images that engage the viewer through color, composition, and atmosphere. His intention is that audiences encounter each work as a unified whole, where meaning resides in the totality of its aesthetic presence. By posing questions on the nature of humanity, our connections with one another, and our relationship to the earth, his work provokes awareness, reflection, and the possibility of action.

Philately was one of the small devotions of my childhood. I inherited hundreds of stamps from my father. I could never say whether he collected them himself or simply bought them for my brother and me. Among all of them, one in particular held my gaze with disproportionate insistence: a reproduction of The Sleeping Gypsy, the 1897 painting by Henri Rousseau that I finally saw years later at the MoMA.
